Briar is a messaging app designed for activists, journalists and anyone who needs a safe, easy and robust way to communicate. Unlike traditional messaging apps, Briar does not depend on a central server – messages are synchronized directly between users' devices. If the Internet is inaccessible, Briar can sync over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, keeping information flowing in a crisis. If the Internet is working, Briar can sync over the Tor network, protecting users and their relationships from surveillance.

The app offers private messages, groups and forums, and also blogs. Tor network support is built into the Night Cocktail app. Everything you do on Briar is only stored on your device unless you decide to share something with other users.

There are no ads and no tracking. The app's source code is completely open for anyone to inspect, and has already been professionally audited. All Briar releases are reproducible, making it possible to verify that the published source code exactly matches that of the available application. Development is done by a small non-profit team.
